to do so soon! During the coming
weeks, Association volunteers will
be calling those who have not yet
contributed. Make check out and
send to: Leech Lake Area Watershed
Foundation, PO Box 455,

Lantern Bay Preservation Purchases Signed!
After 5 years of legal and political action, the Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation and the Child, Girl, Woman Lake Property Association has successfully negotiated the buy-out of most of Thousand Acres Development Company’s land to complete the preservation goals for Lantern Bay. This action saves nearly 20 acres and over 1800 feet of shoreline from development into over 25 home sites. This property will ultimately be preserved as a DNR owned and managed Aquatic Management Area for the benefit of the public.
The 120-acre Lantern Bay of Woman Lake with an average depth of 5 feet and abundant shoreline vegetation is a pristine ecosystem vital to the Child, Girl, Woman Lake chain and watershed. This nursery for fish, nesting area for loons and eagles, resting station for migratory ducks, and vegetative filter that helps maintain lake water clarity was proposed to be the one of the largest developments proposed on the chain in years. This dense development was once approved for up to 32 homes but was successfully opposed with legal action resulting in a court ordered environmental impact statement. Now with this purchase Thousand Acres Development will have just two home sites and one existing home for sale.
Our goal for the past 5 years has been to preserve nearly 5,000 feet of shoreline in Lantern Bay. To date, approximately 3,000 feet of shoreline has been preserved and the remaining property owner’s are committed to conservation actions. With this last purchase from Thousand Acres Development, the conservation goal will be met and Lantern Bay will essentially have been preserved for the protection of fish and wildlife habitat and its contributions to the overall quality of the Woman Lake chain.
Over 200 Woman Lake conservation donors have already given in years past. Those contributions of nearly $80,000 show a track record of incredible results of successful preservation and litigation that has led to this point of opportunity to complete the preservation of Lantern BLeech Lake Area Watershed Foundation with the support of Child, Girl, Woman Lake property owners association has purchased nearly 20 acres and over 1800 feet of shoreline with a bridge loan at 3.8% from The Conservation Fund.
The total purchase is approximately $900,000....
- 1/3rd. is already covered by the DNR.
- 1/3rd. or approximately $340,000 needs to be raised to trigger
- 1/3rd released from a matching grant from the Reinvest in Minnesota Fund (RIM)(habitat license plate money)
